Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy is a non-surgical, light-based treatment that is effective for some of the less severe skin cancers and in the treatment of sun damage and certain types of acne. It has a lower risk of scarring compared with surgery.
In the treatment of acne, photodynamic therapy is a good alternative for patients who can’t or won’t use Isotretinoin because of its potential side effects, or whose acne hasn’t responded to Isotretinoin and other remedies such as topical treatments. It is also ideal for those who demand a ‘natural’ treatment with a low incidence of adverse side effects.
The procedure
Photodynamic therapy is not a complicated procedure and usually requires just a few treatments over the course of a few months.
First the skin is cleaned and a photosensitising cream spray is applied three hours before treatment commences. Then a pure red light is shone on the area to be treated or a pulsed dye laser is used to illuminate the area. The light interacts with the cream spray and destroys the targeted cells.
The healing process
Avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours. Apply a gentle cleanser and moisturiser as directed by your practitioner. The treated area may temporarily appear red or sunburnt. Within two to three days, the treated skin will peel. In some cases scabbing may occur. Within seven to 10 days, the treated area will be healed.
